Past Visiting Scholars

Prof. Alaa Fadel Ahmed Al-Ameri is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Mustansiriyah University (Baghdad) and a specialist in modern Japanese history, Japanese education, and historical methodology. Hosted by Prof. Graham Smith at Newcastle University as a Visiting Scholar (1 May–15 June 2025), he developed Oral History in Iraq: A Methodological and Practical Guide, a curriculum and training framework to embed oral history in Iraqi universities. He has led national curriculum reforms, built partnerships with Chiba and Newcastle universities and IFPO, and founded Al-Qiyam Private Schools in 2015, applying Japan’s Tokkatsu model to character and life-skills education.
